The town of Helper, Utah, was originally a coal and railroad town. The railroad added helper engines to to trains for the long steep climb up the Price River canyon to Soldier Summit. The mines closed, the advent of distributed power negated much of the need for helpers, and the town fell in to decline. Since our visit, the Utah Railway no longer hauls coal, and it's unique MK50's have moved elsewhere. The town is trying to remake it's self for tourists.
