Yosemite

In early May we set off for Yosemite National Park in California. The first day took us to Kingman, where we had dinner with friends Juan & Cindy. Next day took us to Oakhurst, fifteen miles outside the park. I took the scenic route from Needles across the Mojave on Route 66 to show Margie where I'd spent so much time in the past. Trains were plentiful until we got to Goffs, then they became sparse, with a pair of westbounds sitting at Amboy. From Barstow we headed for Mojave, then over Tehachapi to Bakersfield, north to Fresno and up to the park. We stayed at the Wawona, which was OK, but expensive, and the food was so-so. After a couple of nights in the restaurant we bought bread, cheese etc at the local store and ate in our room with a glass of wine. The park is of course spectacular, but at times just heaving with people, I hate to think of what it's like in the season! Tioga Pass was fairly quiet, and Tioga Lake was still partly frozen, and there was still a good amount of snow towards the summit of the pass (9944 feet). The road out to Hetch Hetchy was also pretty quiet. We came home over Tioga Pass, down through the Owens Valley and across Death Valley, spending the night at Boulder City, arriving home the following afternoon.
